Our Mosaic Project is underway and all the segments have been completed in 5 days. We have had scores of children involved in the project, by running workshops at Meols Park Bowls Pavilion,Great Meols Primary School and St Johns Church Hall on from 27th Sept – 2ndOct 2011. The segments are presently on display in St Johns Church, Meols whilst we await installation in the Park Play Area. The Project was funded mainly by a grant from Wirral Council plus donations, from Parks & Leisure, Regal Fish & Chips and Smarties Play Group in Meols together with money funded by Liverpool Echo’s ‘Wish Award Scheme’ and events run by the Friends of Meols Park
On Sunday 1st August 2010, Professor Stephen Harding visited Meols Park with Stein Thue, from the City of Trondheim council and he was very impressed with the park. The kids play area was full of youngsters and we discussed about a possible statue etc. etc. He came up with 2 suggestions
1. Concentrate initially on getting a large replica Viking boat or something that the youngsters can play in. (Sigurd Aase will probably let us have the design for free). Stein says it should be easier getting the funding with this being of direct benefit to the public – i.e. the youngsters.
2. With regard the statue he says that (i) do that after the boat (ii) he pointed out there were a number of Viking statues buried after the 2nd world war because they were ‘too Nordic looking’ and there is currently a debate as to what to do with them – to leave them buried or to display them
There is to be an announcement made soon about the huge reconstruction of the sensational Drakken – Harald Harfagre’s huge longship. The plans are that it will be coming to Meols,Wirral via Dublin and Anglesey after its completion in 2013……..
The ‘Go Green’ Penguin has now arrived in Meols and is awaiting the park wardens to allocate the space in th Park Play Area which is to be ‘Go Greens’ new home.
The Penguin made the journey across ‘the water’ from Liverpool’s Innovation Park with the assistance of Mall and Tony from Wirral’s Park and Leisure Dept and Ellen and Roy from Friends of Meols Park.
6th/7th June 2009. Its the weekend and a pretty dismal one too, it rained all day Saturday hence no work done in the Park. Sunday was a bit brighter and it was nice to see some Dads and Lads playing footie (well the boys were) More...
An additional seating area is being installed at Meols Park. The seats are to be half mooned in shape and the wooden pillars around the area are a form of windbreak. There is going to be some bush and shrub planting around the perimeter and the round circle area on the floor is where we are planning to have a Mosaic done. More about that later, as we need to get some more funds raised.
29th May. The New Swing Frames were assembled and set in place today.
