Norwegian Official Visits Meols Park

Stein Thue, from the City of Trondheim council

On Sunday 1st August 2010, Professor Stephen Harding visited Meols Park with Stein Thue, from the City of Trondheim council and he was very impressed with the park. The kids play area was full of youngsters and we discussed about a possible statue etc. etc. He came up with 2 suggestions
1. Concentrate initially on getting a large replica Viking boat or something that the youngsters can play in. (Sigurd Aase will probably let us have the design for free). Stein says it should be easier getting the funding with this being of direct benefit to the public – i.e. the youngsters.
2. With regard the statue he says that (i) do that after the boat (ii) he pointed out there were a number of Viking statues buried after the 2nd world war because they were ‘too Nordic looking’ and there is currently a debate as to what to do with them – to leave them buried or to display them

There is to be an announcement made soon about the huge reconstruction of the sensational Drakken – Harald Harfagre’s huge longship. The plans are that it will be coming to Meols,Wirral via Dublin and Anglesey after its completion in 2013……..

Nest Swing Foundations Rocked

Nest Swing in Meols Park

Nest Swing in Meols Park

18th Sept 2009. The Nest Swing has been so popular and as a result due to excess numbers of children using it at any one time, the foundation on one of the leg supports has been damaged. After speaking with the contractors they told me that the concrete foundation mix was probably at fault, so they have now rectified the problem by doing a stronger mix and putting in iron straps at the base of the support leg. The swing should be back in action in a few days time when the concrete has set properly

16th September 2009. Received an official looking thank you card from the Mayor and Mayoress of Knowsley Dave and Sarah Smithson, saying “Many thanks for your kind invite and congratulations on your excellent work on the park” Nice touch I thought and it was great that they were able to come along on our Celebration Day especially as two of their ‘subjects’ Gary and Eddie of China Crisis did a surprise appearance.

CRISIS IN THE PARK

China Crisis in Meols Park
The Legendary Eighties Band China Crisis made a guest appearance at our Celebration Day Event on Sunday. It was a “best kept secret” and they wowed the crowd with their musical flair sprinkled with humour. Gary Daly said “He felt like the Vicar of Dibley, but that he would draw the line at judging the bonnie baby competition. The event was a celebration of the new park play area that we have worked so hard to raise funds for.

11th August 2009. We managed to save the 4 old park benches from the scrap heap by getting them restored. Star Design from Birkenhead de-rusted the leg frame brackets then powder coated them with black paint. The old rotted wood was replaced with new stained wood and bolted back on the frames. The benches have been installed on concrete bases in and around the football kick about area.

Mayor & Mayoress of Wirral Visit Meols Park

On Monday 3rd August the Mayor and Mayoress of Wirral Andrew and Kathryn Hodson were attending the Meols Bowling Club where they officially opened the new all weather Veranda on the Pavilion. Thanks must go to Wirral Partnership Homes Your Wirral Fund for accepting the grant application I submitted, that enabled the extension to be built.
Whilst there. the Mayor commented on how good the new Park Play Area looked and asked me if they could pop over to check it out. ‘No problem’ I said and swiftly escorted the Mayor and Mayoress over to the play area, where they chatted freely with some Mums, Dads and Children. We will of course be seeing the Mayor and Mayoress again when they attend our Celebration Day on Sunday 6th September 12-5pm
