Viking History Unveiled in Meols Park

Viking history boards were unveiled in Meols Park on Saturday May 15th 2010 and it could be the first step towards a Wirral-Wide Viking trail.
THE quest for a trail celebrating Wirral’s Viking past is gathering pace with the unveiling of a themed history board in Meols at the weekend. The Friends of Meols Park worked with Wirral Council and Wirral Viking expert Professor Stephen Harding on the project to give visitors an insight into the area’s history as a Viking trading port. It is hoped the idea will be taken up by other groups across Wirral – and there are also plans for a Viking statue if funds can be found. The finished board was unveiled by Esther McVey on Saturday, in her first official engagement as Wirral West MP.
Other Viking-themed celebrations included a re-enactment in front of St John the Baptist Church.
Professor Harding said said: “We hope that these boards going up will see the start now of a Wirral Viking trail and the next job is to raise the money for a statue.” Vikings are thought to have arrived in North West England over a millennium ago. After their expulsion from Dublin in AD902 the Wirral Vikings, initially led by the Norwegian Viking Ingimund, would have landed in their boats along the North Wirral coastline. Some historians believe a Viking boat is buried under the car park of the Railway Inn in Meols.
Roy Shuttleworth, secretary of the Friends of Meols Park, said: “The next thing we want is to get a statue of Ingimund – that’s the vision.” Article by Lorna Hughes- Wirral News

Penguin In The Park

Ellen giving Go Green a Big Hug

The ‘Go Green’ Penguin has now got his new home in the Meols Park Play Area. Any ideas about what we should call him ???? The ‘Go Green’ Penguin was displayed in Liverpool’s Williamson Square and made his way across the water to Meols Park Play Area to settle in to his new home.
Go Green – Description: Well-dressed for winter, this penguin’s simple message urges us all to think of the planet. The Artist was Jan ,an accomplished designer and painter. She recently completed a postgraduate certificate in surface pattern design and is currently studying for her MA in Fine Arts in York St John University. ‘Go Green’s’ sponsor was Arriva Buses.
It’s a straightforward message from our penguin friends; go green and help them fight climate change

Trees Planted in Meols Park

As part of the ongoing improvement to the Meols Park Play Are, we today were greeted with the arrival of 6 established trees and 3 bushes which were planted in and around the Play Area.
When in leaf the trees should give some shade to park users on those scorching hot summer days (hopefully).

Award for Safety & Fun in the Play Area

Another Meols Park Funding Award

Thanks to a successful £1,995 ‘Your Wirral/NHS Wirral Partnership Homes’ Funding Award, we plan to install thermo plastic markings in the Park Play Area. They will be both fun, educational and most importantly raise awareness and understanding of road safety on exiting the park.
The road safety markings will be placed at the two Play Area entrances and will be themed in the STOP, LOOK, LISTEN, LIVE with caricature logos and will be painted in bright easily seen colours. The fun and educational markings will be of Hopscotch’s which make fitness, fun for the children.
The vision of the country is for children to become more active and healthy and the introduction of action games, through floor markings will meet the needs.

Snow In The Park

The snowy weather arrived in Meols Park today the 5th January 2010. The headteacher of Great Meols Primary School decided to let the kids out early and give them the next day off. That never happened in my school days, are the teachers too soft now? or is it a health and safety matter?

Our Sparks In The Park Event

The Friends of Meols Park put on a ‘Sparks In The Park’ event for the local and surrounding communities on Sunday 8th November 2009, when Fun & Fireworks were the order of the day. The weather was really kind to us especially as in the days leading up to the event the weather had been horrendous. The fun started off at 2pm with Childrens Fairground Rides,Bouncy Castles , Slides,Swing Boats and Refreshments galore with Chips,Burgers,Hot Dogs,Candy Floss and of course the superb Mulled Wine made by Rachel and John. 7 Waves 92.1 Community Radio set up in the Marquee to keep us entertained with some great music. They set up beside the Beer and Wine tables at the request of Brian.(only joking) Elaine and her helpers were also in the marquee selling chocolate apples and glow in the dark bracelets to raise funds for the Rainbows. The lucky winner who got to activate the VIP plunger was Alan Scott from Meols. We had to delay the start of the Firework Display as it didn’t get completely dark until 5.55pm but it was well worth the wait. Heres to next years display on the 7th November 2010. Don’t miss it!
