Meols Park Wins Green Flag Award

Image
17th July 2012
Just announced today that Meols Park in Wirral has been recognised as being among the best in the country and has won A Green Flag Award.
The Green Flag Award is a sign that the park is well-maintained, well-managed and has excellent facilities.
The award recognises high quality green spaces in England and Wales managed by voluntary and community groups. The results of 2012’s judging show that Meols Park meets the ever-demanding criteria of these national awards. The Green Flag recognise the achievements of all those whose hard work and dedication help to create well-managed, high-quality places so important for health and leisure activities and which everyone can enjoy.
The scheme’s scoring criteria includes levels of community involvement, space for nature, play provision and their quality and feel. The higher their score, the longer the parks and gardens can fly the flag, subject to unannounced inspections.
With our park providing the perfect location for families during the school holidays, I am really pleased that we have won this award and it just shows what can be done with a run down park by sheer commitment and enthusiasm along with great community involvement and pride.

Well Done to Esther

I hope everyone puts their Political allegiances to one side and joins me in congratulating Esther McVey,the Chair of Friends of Meols Park, on her tremendous achievment in becoming MP for Wirral West. I first met Esther in the Autumn of 2007 after our park play area had been stripped of play equipment by the local authority due to Health & Safety Issues and was immediately impressed by her energy and enthusiasm for local issues. Esther expressed a wish to get involved and in no time we formed a Friends of the Park group of which Esther became Chair. From that day on, Esther was tireless and took a personal interest in fundraising events and helped raise the profile of our campaign to save and refurbish Meols Park. Esther,Abseild off the Royal Liverpool Hospital Roof, did the coastal walk, compered a Gig,served out Ice creams on our fun day, mucked in by planting bulbs and even ripped down the old park fences in preparation for the refurbishment of our new play area and much more. She truly has been a jewel in our community and I am confident that she will be tremendous asset to the whole Wirral West Community as our new Member of Parliament.
After the result was declared at 5.05am, Esther said: “What a journey and what a momentous election”. “There have been people queuing up to vote all day and the turnout is phenomenal.
“I would like to thank all the people who put their faith in me to represent them.
“The Wirral West campaign has been a clean, good fight among all the candidates.
The key was local issues and local concerns and people can know they will have a strong voice representing them in Westminster.” The constituency had been held by Labour since Stephen Hesford defeated Conservative minister David Hunt in 1997.
Result: Esther Mcvey (Con) polled 16,726 votes and won by a majority of 2,436

Liverpool Echo Wish Tokens Collected

Roy, Esther and helpers at St John's Church Centre
There was a real sense of Community spirit at St John’s Church Centre in Meols on the regular Thursday morning Coffee Morning. I went along and with the assistance of Jackie Hall,Rachel and Lynda from our ‘friends’ group and other cheerful volunteers, we spent the morning cutting out and pasting the ‘Wish Tokens on to special collector sheets(10,448 in total). We even had Esther McVey (Our ‘Friends Group’ Chairman) helping out for a couple of hours when she took time off from her campaign to become our local Member of Parliament. Thanks Esther and good luck in your quest and thanks also to all the volunteers in the kitchen … the bacon toasties were lovely…
